bp buys into HYPORT Duqm green hydrogen project in Oman

July 31, 2024 |

In Oman, DEME and OQ have announced a partnership with bp for the HYPORT Duqm project, a major green hydrogen initiative in Oman where bp will acquire a 49% stake in the project, while OQ and DEME will each retain 25.5%. This collaboration will see bp becoming a key player in the green hydrogen project located in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm. The transaction is expected to finalize in Q3 2024.

HYPORT Duqm, Oman’s first large-scale green hydrogen project, spans 150 km² within SEZAD. The project will produce green hydrogen and ammonia using wind and solar energy, with an initial capacity of 1.3 GW in Phase 1, expanding to over 2.7 GW in Phase 2.

The project will integrate with the Port of Duqm’s advanced infrastructure to manage green molecule exports to European and Asian markets. These molecules will support industries transitioning to sustainable decarbonization. Currently in the pre-front-end engineering design phase, HYPORT Duqm aims to begin commercial operations between 2030 and 2031.
