41% of Tonnage Ordered in 1H 2024 Features Alternative Fuels, Reports Clarksons Research

July 3, 2024 |

In China, Xinde Marine News reports Clarksons Research released its latest Green Technology Tracker, and of the total tonnage ordered in the first half of 2024, 41% is for vessels capable of using alternative fuels, such as LNG, methanol, ammonia, LPG, and hydrogen.

Steve Gordon, Global Head of Clarksons Research, noted that despite a decline from the 2022 high of 54% alternative fuel orders, the trend remains strong with significant investments. LNG-capable vessels led the orders with 109 newbuilds, followed by methanol (49 orders), LPG (42 orders), and hydrogen (4 orders).

The report also emphasized the importance of retrofitting energy-saving technologies, with over 8,713 ships already equipped, representing 33.5% of the fleet’s tonnage. Technologies include propeller ducts, rudder bulbs, and air lubrication systems. Scrubber installations continue, with 5,838 ships fitted to reduce emissions.

The increasing age of the global fleet, now averaging 12.8 years, underscores the need for modernization. Investments in port infrastructure are lagging, with only 29 ports equipped for methanol bunkering, compared to 273 ports with LNG facilities.

Clarksons projects that by 2030, over 20% of fleet capacity will be alternative fuel capable, driven by continued investment and regulatory pressures for greener shipping solutions.
