In California, the San Francisco 49ers made NFL history by becoming the first team to purchase sustainable aviation fuel through a partnership with United Airlines. This initiative, part of United’s Eco-Skies Alliance, aims to reduce the carbon footprint associated with team travel. The 49ers will use SAF for their upcoming flight to Los Angeles for the NFC West 49ers-Rams matchup on Sunday.
“SAF has the potential to be a powerful tool to help reduce carbon emissions from flying, but the industry is still in its infancy, supply is limited, and most people don’t know what it is,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “We’re proud to partner with like-minded organizations like the 49ers to demonstrate and elevate to a broader audience why it’s important to support real solutions like SAF.”
As a result of purchasing SAF, the 49ers joined United’s Eco-Skies Alliance, an initiative where participating companies collaborate to share the green premium – the higher cost of purchasing lower-emission fuels. SAF is typically 2 to 4 times more expensive than conventional jet fuel. The team has a strong track record in sustainability, with Levi’s Stadium being the first U.S. professional football stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification.
