IATA warns passengers face higher fares as the aviation industry moves towards net zero

December 7, 2022 |

In Switzerland, Reuters reported that Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association said that airline passengers face higher ticket prices as the industry moves towards its target of reducing emissions to net zero by 2050.

The executive also called for swifter action in Europe to drive up scarce production of sustainable aviation fuel.

According to the report, air fares have already increased this year as a result of higher prices for conventional fossil-based jet fuel.

“Going forward as we see increases in carbon costs…there has to be an impact on ticket prices as the industry transitions to net zero. The airlines cannot absorb increased costs,” Walsh said.

The executive also highlighted the efforts by the US government to boost SAF production in the country.

“In the U.S. it is recognized that sustainable aviation fue are part of the answer and they are heavily focused on additional production,” Walsh said.
