In Los Angeles, PHA bioplastic water bottles produced by Cove have officially launched at local organic grocer Erewhon. The bottles are biodegradable, renewable, non-toxic and compostable, Cove says in a press statement.
“Plastic water bottles have become the emblem of our modern pollution crisis,” says Alex Totterman, founder and CEO of Cove. “By bringing a truly biodegradable alternative to plastic to customers and the industry as a whole, we can begin to reduce plastic waste in our communities.”
PHA is produced and consumed by microorganisms, including those inhabiting soil and marine habitats. PHA biodegrades in all natural environments at a rate comparable to cellulose, without producing any toxic waste.
Cove expects to announce new retail partners “in coming months” as it scales up manufacturing at its LA production facility.
