suMphat Gallery develops mango-based leather

In Thailand, design studio suMphat Gallery and researchers from several Thai universities are showcasing the potential for repurposing mango waste into bio-leather. In an exhibition called second life, the team “[gives] new purpose to food… [and] is paving the way for a circular economy,” suMphat tells designboom.  The project also adds value to agricultural waste while fostering sustainable development.

The bio-leather is made from mango pulps and bacteria and doesn’t require any polymer additives. The second life exhibit includes housewares, accessories, leatherwear and cooling trays made. Participating universities include Khon Kaen University, Mahidol University, and Chulalongkorn University.
