In Austria, Spar Austria said it is adopting bio-based fuel in five regions across the country.
The company said that nearly half of its 300 trucks supplying Spar stores across Austria, have been refueled with renewable Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) since mid-September.
The company noted that this fuel is made from used cooking oil and is considered a renewable low-carbon substitute for diesel. To date, the provinces of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, and Carinthia are using this source, with other regions to follow, Spar said.
SPAR Austria indicated that although the fuel being sourced is 100% bio-based, it still causes emissions during refinery and fuel transportation stages.
