October 13, 2023 |

In India, Energetica India reported that Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL), a subsidiary of Oil India, is gearing up to kick off ethanol production at its biorefinery in Assam, India, from March 2024.

The Assam biorefinery is joint effort involving NRL and Finnish partners Chempolis and Fortum. The project will be India’s pioneer in utilizing bamboo as a feedstock and is projected to produce 50,000 tons of ethanol annually, along with 16,000 tons of furfural and 11,000 tons of acetic acid, according to the report.

“There are no buyers of bamboo in the region as paper mills have closed down. So, plenty of bamboo is available,” said the company’s Managing Director, Bhaskar Phukan.

Phukan also said the company aims to obtain the necessary certificates to enable furfural export to European markets after catering to local demand.
