In India, the Press Trust of India reports the Indian Biogas Association says that by investing $36 billion in compressed biogas, the country could reduce its natural gas imports by 12 million metric tons annually. To make the investments viable, especially for bulking biomass feedstocks such as rice straw, the IBA says the government needs to invest in combine tractors to collect and bale up feedstock for improved storage and logistics. More than 750 million tons of biomass and 230 million tons of surplus agricultural residue are available annually for feedstock.
