Blue Visby Solution slashes CO2 emissions in maritime prototype trials

May 22, 2024 |

Global Consortium Blue Visby’s recent prototype trials demonstrated a 17.3% average decrease in maritime carbon emissions. Conducted in March and April 2024, these trials featured the bulk carriers M/V Gerdt Oldendorff and M/V Begonia, chartered by CBH Group, performing ballast voyages to Australia’s Kwinana Grain Terminal. The trials yielded impressive results, with the M/V Gerdt Oldendorff achieving a 28.2% reduction in CO2 emissions and the M/V Begonia a 12.9% reduction.

The Blue Visby Solution aims to eradicate the inefficient “Sail Fast Then Wait” (SFTW) practice, where ships rush to their destinations only to idle, contributing to about 20% of shipping’s carbon footprint. By optimizing voyage speeds and coordination, the solution reduces emissions without disrupting voyage planning, weather routing, or port operations.

Blue Visby Marine Operations Lead Risto-Juhani Kariranta said, “The robustness of our systems was proven when we had to deal with the operational complexities when one of the ships had to deviate. We have also learned valuable lessons about the outlook of vessels’ crews and how they can provide support”.
