In California, Marine Link reports the United States’ first hydrogen-powered ferry, Sea Change, has received its Certificate of Inspection (COI) from the U.S. Coast Guard. The COI marks one of the final milestones for expected June commercial operations in the San Francisco Bay Area.
SWITCH Maritime, the company behind this groundbreaking zero-emissions vessel, announced the COI, emphasizing years of collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard. “This is not the finish line, but just a starting point from which to build many more,” said Pace Ralli, CEO of SWITCH Maritime.
Sea Change, a 70-foot aluminum catamaran designed by Incat Crowther and built by Bay Ship and Yacht and All American Marine, features a hydrogen power system from Zero Emission Industries.
Set to begin service in June, Sea Change will be operated by the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) on a six-month trial, supported by public-private sponsorship including United Airlines and the Golden State Warriors.
