Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and NGK Insulators to advance clean fuel production

May 28, 2024 |

In Japan, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and NGK Insulators Ltd. will collaborate to develop membrane dehydration systems for Bioethanol and e-Methanol production. Bioethanol, an alternative to gasoline and a key component in Sustainable Aviation Fuel and e-Methanol, a promising next-generation marine fuel, stand to benefit from this technology.

MHI will utilize its expertise in methanol plant operations, while NGK will provide its advanced sub-nano ceramic membrane technology, known for high separation accuracy and durability.

The project involves creating two distinct membrane dehydration systems.  The Bioethanol system will replace the conventional, energy-intensive dehydration process, significantly lowering energy consumption. The e-Methanol system, using hydrogen and CO2 as raw materials, will also cut energy usage in production.
