Natural Material Studio creates complete home furnishing set with bioplastic

June 24, 2024 |

In Denmark, Natural Material Studio has designed an entire home interior, including dining room, lounge, and bedroom, using bioplastic.

Dubbed Utopia, the installation uses the studio’s Procel bioplastic and was on display during Copenhagen’s recent 3 Days of Design festival.

“[Utopia] has for sure been the most challenging [installation] to date due to the complexity in scale and the three-dimensionality of the whole ‘house’,” studio founder Bonnie Hvillum tells dezeen. “You can really start to see how we can live with these new materials.”

The bioplastic is made from an undisclosed natural protein found in both plants and animals.   “The presented design objects are really pushing the possibilities of these materials,” Hvillum added.

Procel furniture and décor can be recast into new products or buried in soil, where the items will biodegrade in a bout 30 days.  “We are basically investigating fluidity,” Hvillum said. “So everything is in motion and things can move on to have another life. “
