In Singapore, Trafigura Group has successfully executed its first ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of 6,000 metric tonnes of ammonia in international waters near Ceuta in the Strait of Gibraltar from the Green Power Medium Gas Carrier (MGC) to the Gas Aegean Small Gas Carrier. The ammonia, supplied by CF Industries from their Donaldsonville Louisiana complex, will be used by Fertiberia for fertilizer production.
The STS operation, managed by International Fender Provider, follows current regulations and highlights the growing feasibility of ammonia bunkering. Andrea Olivi, Head of Wet Freight for Trafigura, noted, “Our first safe and efficient STS transfer of ammonia supports our growing ammonia trading activity and demonstrates the feasibility of ammonia bunkering as demand for hydrogen-based low carbon fuels grows.”
In May 2024, Trafigura signed a contract for four MGCs capable of using low-carbon ammonia as propulsion fuel, with the first ship expected in 2027. This STS transfer is a significant step in Trafigura’s efforts to decarbonize shipping, part of its broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas intensity by 25% by FY2030.
