Corvus Energy’s Blue Whale ESS Secures RINA Type Approval

July 24, 2024 |

In Norway, Corvus Energy announced its large-scale marine energy storage system, the Blue Whale ESS, has received Type Approval from Italian marine classification society RINA. This certification confirms the Blue Whale ESS’s compliance with RINA’s stringent rules for lithium battery systems.

Designed for large vessels, including cruise ships and Service Operation Vessels, the Blue Whale ESS incorporates advanced safety features from the Corvus Orca ESS and optimized energy density for enhanced power delivery. This ensures extended zero-emission operations, even in emissions-restricted zones and ports.

Fredrik Witte, CEO of Corvus Energy stated, “A large-scale battery system designed to meet the energy demands of larger vessels, including cruise ships and large passenger and vehicle transport vessels, is key to support the advancement of maritime decarbonization and emissions reduction efforts.”

Production of the Blue Whale ESS is based near Vancouver, Canada, with more than fifteen orders totaling over 95 MWh confirmed for delivery between 2024 and 2026. Corvus Energy is also pursuing additional approvals from Bureau Veritas and American Bureau of Shipping.
