India’s diesel diet: a splash of ethanol

August 13, 2024 |

In India, The Economic Times reports in an ambitious bid to curb carbon emissions, India’s government has announced plans to blend 5% ethanol into diesel, a shift that could shake up both the energy sector and environmental efforts. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, aims to integrate over 1 billion liters of ethanol into India’s diesel supply annually.

Ethanol, primarily derived from surplus sugarcane and corn, presents a dual opportunity for India: reducing agricultural waste and fostering an indigenous biofuel industry. However, the plan is not just about energy security or cleaner emissions. It’s also seen as a lifeline for farmers, who stand to gain new markets for their crops, thereby boosting rural incomes.

Critics, though, caution about the potential strain on water resources and food prices, given the increased demand for biofuel crops. Additionally, some in the automotive sector worry about the adaptability of current diesel engines to the new blend.

As India drives forward with this green mandate, the move could position it as a leader in sustainable transport, provided it navigates the economic and ecological potholes ahead.
