In New Jersey, Aviation International News reports Universal Fuel Technologies has developed a revolutionary sustainable aviation fuel production process called flexiforming, capable of using over 50 different feedstocks and enhancing efficiency by integrating into existing SAF facilities. Based in Los Altos, California, UFT’s innovation not only drives down manufacturing costs by upgrading low-value byproducts but also boasts significant energy savings, consuming 75% less energy than traditional ethanol-to-jet technologies and 33% less hydrogen.
“This technology allows SAF producers to create a genuinely drop-in-ready renewable jet fuel due to the presence of all required molecules,” said UFT CEO Alexei Beltyukov. “For example, a SAF producer using HEFA, which only produces paraffinic SAF, could add flexiforming to their plant to convert naphtha and LPG byproducts to aromatic SAF that can be blended with the HEFA SAF for a fully synthetic jet fuel that can be sold directly without the need for blending with conventional jet fuel.”
UFT plans to submit the process for ASTM approval and prepare for its first commercial application by the end of 2024.
