In Japan, Hamanaka Town, JA Hamanaka, Takanashi Milk Products, Hokkaido Gas, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and MOL Sunflower launched a study to explore using biomethane from dairy farm manure as an alternative to liquefied natural gas in factories and vessels. This study, centered in the dairy-rich region of Hamanaka, Hokkaido, will assess whether biomethane can be integrated into existing infrastructures to fuel both factories and vessels, thereby supporting the global push towards net-zero emissions by 2050.
Biomethane represents a promising step towards decarbonization, utilizing existing transport and consumption infrastructure. This joint effort unites the expertise and resources of the six organizations, each contributing its knowledge to explore the feasibility and environmental benefits of biomethane in a practical, scalable manner.
