PowerCell receives DNV approval for methanol-to-power marine system

September 4, 2024 |

In Sweden, PowerCell Group received Approval in Principle from Den Norske Veritas on September 4, 2024, for its new Methanol-to-Power system, a solution that converts methanol into hydrogen for fuel cells to support maritime industry decarbonization. The system combines a methanol reformer from RIX Industries with PowerCell’s Marine System 225, offering a cleaner, efficient energy source for vessels.

Methanol, already available in large harbors around the world, is emerging as a viable fuel to aid in the transition from traditional energy sources to more sustainable options. By reforming methanol into hydrogen, the system simplifies ship integration, improves safety, and enhances efficiency in the maritime sector’s electrification efforts.

Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell, noted that the development aligns with the company’s “Industrialized Innovation” strategy, aimed at reducing time-to-market and technical risks for customers adopting clean energy solutions. Collaboration with RIX Industries has further optimized the system’s design for performance and safety.

The AiP from DNV confirms the system meets strict safety standards, positioning it as a significant advancement in reducing emissions in maritime operations, as the industry moves toward more sustainable, zero-emission solutions.
