In Japan, on September 4, 2024, the Hydrogen Engine R&D Centre, established by JPNH₂YDRO—a joint venture between CMB.TECH, TSUNEISHI Facilities & Craft, and Kambara Kisen—officially opened in Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama City to advance the development of hydrogen-powered engines for maritime shipping.
Equipped with an engine test bench and a hydrogen fueling station, the centre aims to advance hydrogen dual-fuel engines that can be used in various vessels, including those built by the Tsuneishi Group. These engines are intended to provide a cleaner alternative to conventional maritime fuels, reducing emissions and supporting more sustainable shipping practices.
In addition to research, the centre will work on certifying hydrogen engines to meet regulatory standards in Japan, ensuring they can be approved for commercial use.
