Rubicon fund backs UK green energy project with £15 million loan

September 10, 2024 |

In Ireland, Rubicon’s Infrastructure and Energy Transition Debt Fund committed £15 million to finance an anaerobic digestion plant in Wales, marking the fund’s first transaction. The project, developed by abrdn Global Sustainable Infrastructure Partners and Circular Economy Developments, will convert 120,000 tonnes of food waste annually into 180 MWh of biomethane, with a portion used to generate 5 MW of green electricity.

The facility, scheduled for commercial operations in 2026, aims to reduce landfill waste and provide sustainable energy, aligning with the EU Green Standards for climate change mitigation. The total project cost exceeds £60 million, funded through Rubicon’s loan, a short-term construction facility, and equity from abrdn.

The plant will sell biomethane and electricity via long-term purchase agreements, ensuring stable returns. Additionally, carbon capture technologies will be integrated, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality or even negative emissions.
