Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex bring CORSIA-certified SAF to Japan

September 19, 2024 |

In Japan, Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex have teamed up to bring the first batch of CORSIA-certified sustainable aviation fuel to Japan, by blending over 1,000 tons of Neste supplied neat SAF at GS Caltex’s refinery in Yeosu, South Korea, before being transported to Narita International Airport.

This SAF will be available for purchase by All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, marking the first time CORSIA-certified SAF has been made commercially available in Japan. The initiative, which precedes the mandatory phase of CORSIA in 2027, represents a collaborative effort to reduce aviation emissions and support global climate goals.

Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Neste’s Renewable Aviation Business, emphasized that this project is a step forward in providing airlines like ANA and JAL with real solutions to reduce carbon emissions. Tetsuya Yamada, Chief Operating Officer at ITOCHU, highlighted the importance of developing a stable SAF supply chain to address Japan’s aviation fuel shortages.

The collaboration underscores the importance of partnerships in accelerating the transition to cleaner energy in aviation, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where demand for sustainable solutions continues to rise.
