In the UK, on September 26, 2024, the global maritime community marks World Maritime Day, celebrating 50 years since the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea with events held at the International Maritime Organization’s headquarters in London.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: “Today, the maritime sector is undergoing a profound transformation as it steers towards greater digitalization, automation and decarbonization. New technologies and designs offer the opportunity to make important contributions to climate action. I count on the commitment of regulators, seafarers and ship operators alike.”
SOLAS, regarded as the most critical international treaty for merchant ship safety, was first enacted in response to the Titanic disaster of 1912, and its modern version was adopted in 1974. Today, it covers key areas such as life-saving equipment, distress communications, and the safe carriage of dangerous goods. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized the continuing importance of SOLAS, noting that while it has been pivotal in reducing maritime disasters, the industry cannot afford complacency in the face of emerging risks.
Landmarks, including IMO Headquarters, will be lit in blue to promote this year’s theme, with IMO inviting member states and organizations to do the same.
