DNV reports surge in alternative-fueled vessel orders in 2024

October 3, 2024 |

In Greece, Safety4Sea reports classification society DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights database has revealed that 2024 has seen a significant shift towards alternative-fueled vessels, with a total of 335 new orders so far, marking a 25% increase compared to the same period in 2023. According to Jason Stefanatos, Global Decarbonization Director at DNV, despite a slow September with just 13 orders, the broader trend indicates strong growth in the maritime industry’s move towards greener solutions.

Methanol dominated vessel orders in the first half of the year, but the third quarter saw liquefied natural gas making a strong comeback, accounting for 64% of all orders during that period. In Q3 alone, 105 new LNG-fueled vessels were ordered, led primarily by the container segment, which represented two-thirds of these new orders. Gas tankers and car carriers also contributed significantly, with 26 and 13 orders respectively.

Ammonia-fueled vessels are also gaining traction, with 15 orders placed in 2024, up from just two in 2023. This increase highlights growing confidence in ammonia as a viable future fuel.

The overall trend reflects the maritime sector’s ongoing transition toward alternative fuels, driven by the need for greener shipping solutions and advancements in fuel technology.
