Marine fuel additives bridge the gap to green fuels, cutting emissions

October 10, 2024 |

In Florida, World Fuel Services and Infineum released a white paper highlighting the importance of marine fuel additives as a bridge solution during the transition to alternative fuels in the shipping industry. According to the report, while future fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol are gaining traction, it may take 10–15 years before they are widely available. During this period, additives can significantly enhance the performance of existing fuels like very-low-sulfur fuel oil by improving combustion, reducing emissions, and maintaining engine cleanliness the report states.

Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of additives in lowering specific fuel oil consumption, cutting nitrogen oxide emissions by 4%, and preventing fuel stability issues, such as asphaltene buildup. Infineum’s products, such as B402, have been shown to reduce carbon dioxide and particulate emissions, and B201 has been shown to reduce Total Sediment Potential, helping prevent fuel sludge and ensuring smoother engine performance

According to the white paper, as the maritime industry faces increasing environmental regulations, such as the European Union’s Emissions Trading System and the Carbon Intensity Indicator, fuel additives are becoming a practical solution for ship operators to meet these standards.
