In South Korea, on February 12, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy announced a $7.63 million R&D initiative aimed at advancing shipbuilding and marine technology. Applications are open through March 13, with funding supporting ten general research projects, two eco-friendly ship advancements, and five digital transformation efforts.
The initiative will fund research into ammonia-fueled engines, onboard CO2 capture and treatment, high-capacity direct current systems, exhaust gas post-treatment for ammonia engines, and wind-assisted propulsion. Other projects will address welding automation, energy-efficient ship design, and digital production technologies that enhance shipyard efficiency and collaboration.
The program also incentivizes workforce development. Companies hiring young workers—under 34, or up to 39 with military service adjustments—can reduce their cost share. For every $375,000 in government funding, at least one young worker must be hired, with additional hires offsetting costs. Support is available for part-time female researchers and maternity leave salaries.
A ministry official stated, “The selection process will prioritize innovation that enhances industry competitiveness and meets future regulatory challenges.”
