In California, the country’s largest supermarket company, Cincinnati-based Kroger has invested an undisclosed amount in an energy facility at its Compton-based distribution center that will process up to 55,000 tons of organic food waste annually. The facility eliminates half a million miles in truck trips per year that used to transport the food waste to a composting facility in Bakersfield. Boston-based Feed Resource Recovery designed and operates the system. Kroger is contemplating replicating the project at its other distribution centers throughout the country.
