In the US, a new book entitled The Growth of Biofuels in the 21st Century has been published, drawing on interviews with policy insiders in Brazil, the EU, and the US to analyze the ambition and landscape in biofuels policy. Authors Rob Ackrill, professor at Nottingham Trent University, and Adrian Kay, professor at the Australian National University, seek to offer an objective analysis that can help equip readers with the tools to understand more fully the issues and debates around biofuels. To do this, they frame their discussion around the saying heard frequently in Brazil, that there is no such thing as good biofuels or bad biofuels, only biofuels done well or done badly. As the authors themselves acknowledge, however, ‘we are aware that we are quite likely to be seen by some as offering a pro-biofuels analysis, simply because we are not specifically anti-biofuels.’
