4 minutes with… Shayne Murphy, Chairman / CEO, Enerbi Pty

Tell us about your company and it’s role in the Advanced Bioeconomy.

Enerbi is a bio – energy company with a principle focus in the development of cost effective biomass power systems for utilisation in regional and island communities. we are also working with Chinese Businesse in the area of waste recycling,RDF production and waste to fertiliser projects.we are also working on r&d in liquid extraction mainly oil.

Tell us about your role and what you are focused on in the next 12 months.

my role in the company is about strategic development and getting the company into a position where it can make the most of the opportunities that are before us we are currently working on 4 recycling W2E project proposals both here in Austarlia and in China. enerbi has developed a liquid from solids extraction method that we think will revolutionise the oil extraction industry especially in the food and cosmetic sectors, we are currently in discussion with a major cosmetic oil producer for this technology we are also developing a very low cost multy biomass power producing system we hope will be available in 2016 this system will be able to produce very low cost power in the 300kw to 5MW range and will be able to utilise a broad range of biomass feedstocks enerbi of course would like to see a much faster development of the waste 2 energy and recycling industry here in australia but we have a very heavy anchor to pull along with us called government but we are optimists

What do you feel are the most important milestones the industry must achieve in the next 5 years?  

in our view we must get more pace into waste recycling and reuse and i mean real recycling and real reuse that is what a bio-economy should be about there are so many opportunities in these areas that can generate employment and wealth its difficult to understand how governments just dont get it.

If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about the Advanced Bioeconomy, what would you change?

governments and public servants that cant see the wood for the trees and only look for short term fixs that suit a stupidly short political cycles

Of all the reasons that influenced you to join the Advanced Bioeconomy industry, what single reason stands out for you as still being compelling and important to you?

to improve the world and create new industries and new employment

Where are you from? 

i was born in the west coast mining town of Queenstown Tasmania and spent much of my chldhood on my grandmothers farm

What was your undergraduate major in college, and where did you attend? Why did you choose that school and that pathway?

i do not have any academic qualifications as i left school before i completed third year high school my qualifications came by way of life experience and in many ways i have been grateful for that given some of the academics i have met

Who do you consider your mentors – could be personal, business, or just people you have read about and admire. What have you learned from them?

there have been many but for dreamers there are always those that stand out

the main things i have learned from the first two is never give up even in the face of great adversity from DA it is just how important it is that we care for our world

What’s the biggest lesson you ever learned during a period of adversity?

keep your eyes and ears open and never leave your back uncovered

What hobbies do you pursue, away from your work in the industry?

i am a fisherholic and you havent given me enough characters to talk about it

What are 3 books you’d want to have with you, if you were stranded on a desert island.

SAS survival manual and two mindless peices to wile away the time

What books or articles are on your reading list right now, or you just completed and really enjoyed?  

i try to read as much as i can on new technologies in our areas of interest i also read both fiction and non fiction history and have just completed War at the Edge of the World

What’s your favorite city or place to visit, for a holiday?  

anywhere where there are fish with clear water, clear air and not many people
