In Canada, researchers at the Yukon Research Centre are doing pilot tests on contaminated water coming from the Silver King mine in the Keno District using a mixture of molasses and ethanol to clean it up. The high sugar content feeds sulfate reducing bacteria that eat at the metals to help bring them back to a solid state that makes clean up easier. The process is meant to eventually replace lime that is currently used to clean up contaminated water.
