In Spain, AGR Biogás has started construction of the first biogas plant with biomethane injection in Andalusia. This milestone marks a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for the local community and the wider environment.
The project consists of an approximate investment of 25 million euros, with Project Finance financing for a value close to 20 million granted by ING Bank NV. It is the first biomethane project financed under this modality in Spain, marking a milestone in the Spanish energy panorama and complying with the strategic plan announced by AGR in July 2023.
The plant, located in the municipality of La Calahorra, Granada, will have a total treatment capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per year, which will be mainly from livestock and olive groves generated in its surroundings.
This capacity will allow the production of 58 GWh per year of energy in biomethane, thus contributing to the reduction of 23,000 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to the emissions of 6,500 cars circulating annually in Spain. In addition, the plant will generate Digestate that acts as a fertilizer and will benefit local agriculture, thus promoting more sustainable agricultural practices and closing the nutrient cycle efficiently.
