Alfa Laval surpasses 100 orders for methanol fuel system, leading the shift to alternative fuels

In Sweden, Alfa Laval announced reaching over 100 orders for its FCM Methanol low-flashpoint fuel supply system (LFSS). This success underscores the maritime industry’s growing confidence in Alfa Laval’s fuel treatment expertise, particularly as shipyards and owners pivot towards methanol as a key alternative fuel.

The FCM Methanol, launched in 2015, boasts the longest operational experience in the market, with over 450,000 running hours at sea. Methanol, the most contracted alternative fuel in 2023, is gaining traction with over 250 new methanol-capable vessels ordered globally.

Viktor Friberg, Head of Marine Separation & Fuel Supply Systems at Alfa Laval, attributes this milestone to strong partnerships with engine designers, shipyards, and pioneering shipowners. “Together, we will continue to develop fuel treatment solutions for alternative fuels and support the maritime industry’s ambition to meet the climate targets,” Friberg remarked.

Alfa Laval’s third-generation FCM Methanol is part of both new builds and retrofit projects, including the industry’s first methanol retrofit for Maersk. The company is also expanding its reach with ongoing collaborations to develop systems for ammonia and 4-stroke engines.
