In New York, Amogy has joined forces with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering POSCO Holdings, Seoul National University, and the American Bureau of Shipping to develop an innovative offshore ammonia cracking solution. This collaboration aims to deliver clean, low-cost hydrogen fuel by leveraging ammonia as a hydrogen carrier.
Ammonia, with its 2.7 times higher energy density than hydrogen, is seen as a promising alternative fuel for the maritime industry. The consortium’s solution will crack ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, unlocking ammonia’s potential as a cost-effective, carbon-free energy source. HD KSOE will design the ammonia supply system, while Amogy provides its cutting-edge ammonia-cracking technology. POSCO Holdings will optimize the system for maritime applications, SNU will contribute expertise in process design, and ABS will handle certification.
This partnership is expected to drive South Korea’s efforts to establish a robust ammonia market and support its decarbonization goals. Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo highlighted the partnership’s importance in revolutionizing clean fuel solutions, particularly for marine transport. Patrick Ryan, ABS CTO, emphasized the solution’s potential to accelerate the energy transition in heavy industries by producing hydrogen offshore.
