In New York, Amogy successfully completed the maiden voyage of the NH3 Kraken, the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered maritime vessel, sailing on a Hudson River tributary near New York City as a demonstration of its proprietary ammonia-to-power technology. The vessel, originally built in 1957 and retrofitted with Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power system, marks a pivotal advancement in efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry.
This achievement showcases the viability of ammonia as a carbon-free maritime fuel, aligning with global goals, including the International Maritime Organization’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Amogy’s CEO, Seonghoon Woo, highlighted the importance of the demonstration in proving that decarbonization targets are within reach.
The NH3 Kraken’s voyage follows prior successful applications of Amogy’s technology in drones, commercial farm tractors, and semi-trucks. Amogy’s system cracks liquid ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen, generating power without carbon emissions. The vessel used green ammonia, produced entirely from renewable energy, further reducing its carbon footprint.
Amogy plans to apply knowledge from this demonstration to future projects, both retrofits and newbuilds, as part of its broader commercialization efforts, with contracts already in progress with key partners.
