#10 Even pirates arrrrgh going green

In Grand Cayman, an annual festival celebrating pirate culture will keep Davy Jones’s locker clean by using biodegradable single-use products produced from sugarcane and cornstarch. 

“Once again, we will be incorporating the ‘Pirates Against Plastic’ initiative this year,” Pirates Week Executive Director Melanie McField tells Cayman Compass. “We have worked extremely hard to put structures in place that allow us to reduce the use of plastics during the festival.” Food vendors were formally requested to use biodegradable food containers, and bagasse food containers and cornstarch cutlery will be provided as part of their stall agreement, she adds. 

The organization has also partnered with Plastic Free Cayman to host a public beach clean-up. 

 “Ocean conservation continues to be a key message for many organizations, and we are thrilled that the Pirates Week Festival can play its part in the global effort,” McField adds. 

The festival—which includes music, street dances, competitions, games, traditional dishes and drinks, a “Pirate Pooch Parade”, sporting events, a pirate invasion and fireworks—kicks off November 1st on Cayman Brac.
