Avolta and DB Schenker Launch Marine Biofuel Route Between Barcelona and Miami

June 26, 2024 |

In Switzerland, Avolta, a leader in global travel experiences, has partnered with logistics giant DB Schenker to initiate the first-ever marine biofuel transport route between Barcelona and Miami. This pioneering initiative marks a significant step in sustainable maritime transport, utilizing Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME) derived from waste cooking oil. The move is set to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 84%, potentially preventing over 150 tons of CO2e Well-to-Wake emissions annually based on Avolta’s 2023 container volumes.

The Book & Claim System will guide the biofuel’s application, ensuring full traceability and credible climate impact through third-party validation. This effort aligns with new International Maritime Organization (IMO) strategies aiming for a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2023 and advancing towards at least 10% of shipping energy from zero-emission sources by 2050.

Camillo Rossotto of Avolta stated that this agreement is a major step towards decarbonizing their shipping operations, highlighting their commitment to long-term sustainability in logistics. Miguel Ángel de la Torre of DB Schenker emphasized the role of their company in guiding customers through sustainable transformations, positioning Avolta ahead of forthcoming environmental regulations.
