Billie Eilish turns to mushroom-based earplugs for hearing protection

October 14, 2024 |

In San Francisco, a mycelium-based earplugs company is finding favor from music industry heavyweights like Billie Eilish and The Lumineers.

Named GOB, the company sources mycelium foam from New York’s Ecovative. GOB’s first product—a single-use earplug dubbed DFC-001—degrades in just weeks if they find their way into the environment.

“It’s hugely important that we support and road-test new products, especially when it comes to sustainability,” Dick Massey, Billie Eilish’s tour manager, told Green Queen. “GOB’s earplugs are a great example – they provide excellent hearing protection, and everyone I’ve shown them to loves that they’re 100% biodegradable. If more people knew about them, they’d use them. It’s a brilliant concept, and I hope it pushes others to think outside the box.”
