Four critical challenges in biochemical and thermochemical processing were addressed in the just released “Bioprocessing Separations Consortium Three-Year Overview” U.S. BETO report, including targeting the fractionation of lignin to enable valorization; Developing technologies to enable process intensification to cut bioprocessing capital costs and make processes more efficient; Recovering carbon from dilute aqueous streams that are common to bioprocessing; and Designing and developing new materials and catalysts to reduce targeted foulants and poisons in bioprocessing streams that can limit the lifetime of downstream catalysts or fermenting microorganisms.
