British designer highlights potential for bioluminescent algae

October 7, 2024 |

In Tahiti, designer Christopher Bellamy has created three items—a drum, swimsuit, and ornamental neckpiece—out of bioluminescent algae in a research project dubbed “Lucid Life.”

The objects glow in response to touch or movement, allowing users to feel more connected with the natural world. Bellamy told  design publication dezeen he was inspired by Mo’orea, which is home to both a strong Polynesian indigenous population and a uniquely diverse ecosystem.

“Living materials’ ability to grow, adapt and heal has been used symbiotically by humans for thousands of years,” said Bellamy. “However, they are now replaced by the more reliable and repeatable inert materials which dominate our day-to-day lives.”

Bellamy worked closely with artist and researcher Tokainiua Jean-Daniel Devatine, who is also deputy director of the Centre des Métiers d’Art de la Polynésiefrançaise, on Lucid Life.
