Can Jet Fuel Be Grown On Trees?

In Australia, Scientists from the Australian National University, in a bid to help reduce the 2% global aviation contributes to man-made carbon emissions, have identified that Australia’s eucalyptus trees has the potential of producing jet fuels.

“Eucalyptus oils contains compounds called monoterpenes that can be converted into a high energy fuel, and this high energy fuel can actually fly jets and even tactical missiles” said lead researcher Carsten Kulheim. However, there is a challenge associated with this.  The researchers have a challenge of finding a way of breeding and harvesting trees with high concentration of monoterpenes like pinene and limonene.
