ChemBioWar: Chemicals, warfare and biobased protective systems

The future of protective systems

But think crop protection for a moment. Could yields be enhanced more affordably and safely by deploying pesticides and insecticides at the actual line of defense — at the plant wall.

Could nitrogen uptake be made more efficient, or photosynthetic efficiency made more efficient, through development of protective systems. Fanciful today — but perhaps what crops need is a really good biobased armor that, as an organic substance, can grow and develop with them. Or, think microencapsulated moisture, activated in times of water stress.

When shields are alive and responsive, many things become possible in the out years.

In there here and now, there’s more protection available, in an increasingly nasty world, for the men and women on the front lines of freedom.
