In China, Big Wind reports China’s biodiesel industry began refocusing on domestic markets after the European Union imposed anti-dumping duties of 12.8% to 36.4% on Chinese biodiesel exports in July. The duties, which affected nearly 90% of China’s biodiesel exports—1.8 million tonnes in 2023—have severely impacted trade with the EU, which had relied on China for 60% of its biodiesel imports.
To address this, Chinese authorities and industry leaders convened in Beijing to discuss accelerating biodiesel’s domestic application. China’s biodiesel production, mainly sourced from waste oils, reached over 2 million tonnes in 2023. The industry is now looking to boost domestic consumption, particularly in transportation and shipping sectors.
Efforts are underway to expand biodiesel usage in vehicles and marine applications, with Shanghai leading by building a full biodiesel supply chain. However, other regions still lag in adoption. The government has initiated pilot projects across 19 cities, but industry experts highlight that policy support and infrastructure improvements are needed to scale up domestic use.
