In India, the city municipal corporation for Coimbatore has selected a private firm based in Pune to set up a bio methanation plant with a capacity to process 5 tonnes of vegetable and other organic waste. The plant will use the resulting biogas for use by local community kitchens and to power street lights.
According to the article in the India Times, future plants will be established depending on the utilization and performance of this first plant. The article quotes an unnamed corporation official, stating, “It is being recommended to ease the daily burden of waste disposal on the municipal corporation. We should try to reduce the total quantity of garbage directed to the dump yard by adopting various sustainable methods of processing and recycling.”
