In the United Arab Emirates, construction has officially started on a new ammonia production facility in Al Ruwais, UAE, expected to produce 1 million tons of ammonia annually. Mitsui & Co.’s collaboration on the project with UAE’s TA’ZIZ and Fertiglobe, and South Korea’s GS Energy Corporation, is financed by a Mitsui signed loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
Scheduled to commence operations in 2027 the facility targets lower CO2 emissions than traditional processes. Key to this innovation is the installation of technology to capture and store CO2 during ammonia production, with the plant set to begin clean ammonia production by 2030.
Mitsui, Japan’s leading ammonia importer, will offtake a certain volume of the clean ammonia produced at the new UAE plant to supply Asian markets. Mitsui has collaborated with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) on UAE LNG projects since the 1970s.
ADNOC, the state-owned enterprise of Abu Dhabi, founded TA’ZIZ in 2020 with investment firm ADQ for chemical and advanced fuel development. Fertiglobe, another ADNOC partnership, this time with OCI Global, is a major force in the global market as the largest seaborne exporter of urea and ammonia.
