In the UK, DB Cargo UK announced that all trains operating for Drax Group at the UK’s largest renewable energy plant near Selby will now be powered by Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil. This switch to the environmentally friendly fuel is part of Drax Group’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
DB Cargo UK transports approximately 4.5 million tonnes of biomass pellets to Drax Power Station annually, operating around 60 trains per week. The HVO-powered trains will supply around 57% of Drax’s total biomass. With the transition from traditional red diesel to HVO, the estimated reduction in rail freight carbon emissions is up to 90%, saving over 12,000 tonnes of carbon each year.
HVO, considered one of the purest and greenest fuels, is made from waste vegetable oils or animal fats. It significantly reduces CO2 and NOx emissions without using any virgin products.
DB Cargo UK’s Chief Sales Officer Roger Neary said, “Until a firm commitment is made to electrification of the UK network, HVO is the only credible solution to rail freight decarbonisation.”
