Denso to start SOEC demo to produce and use green hydrogen for manufacturing

June 29, 2023 |

In Japan, Denso Corporation announced it plans to launch a pilot program in July at its Hirose Plant that uses a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC), a Denso-developed device that produces green hydrogen through electrolysis of high-temperature steam, to help power and increase the sustainability of its manufacturing operations.

The trial will incorporate a verification test using the produced green hydrogen in a prototype power card line, Denso said.

Initially, the SOEC will utilize externally purchased green electricity as its power source. However, starting from 2025, Denso plans to replace this with green electricity generated by solar power generation facilities installed within the Hirose Plant.

“Based on the insights and achievements gained from the development of automotive products, Denso aims to continue exploring the potential of green hydrogen in the manufacturing field and contribute to the creation of a carbon-neutral society,” the company said.
