Designer creates microalgae material that stimulates plant growth

September 2, 2024 |

In Germany, designer Laura Bordini has created packaging from microalgae that stimulates plant growth when it ends up in the environment. Called “By Osmosis,” the concept illustrates how packaging can have a useful second life, creating a circular process.

Bordini sources the microalgae biomass from a waste disposal center in Lindlar, Germany. The concept has already been used to make a flower holder as well as plantable cards with puns like, “Nice to seed you.”

Bordini hopes concepts such as hers will help “make the ecological regeneration a reality and hopefully, eventually become the norm.”
