In Belgium, Platts reports the European Commission has decided to begin surveillance on ethanol imports in light of a surge in supplies with the investigation going back three years to try to uncover anomalies in trade. Between 2021 and 2022, there was a 45% increase in ethanol imports into the European Union, a trend which concerns the industry and the EC that will seek to protect member states. Last year, the US, Brazil and Peru were the top three origins of ethanol imports into Europe but while Peru’s volume fell, the other two soared.
