In Spain, Inditex, the parent company of fast-fashion giant Zara, has made an undisclosed investment in Galy, a company looking to replace conventional cotton cultivation with cotton grown in a lab using plant cells.
Galy’s technology produces high-quality cotton without the need for soil, water, or pesticides. By precisely controlling the growth conditions, the process is also able to optimize fiber quality.
The investment supports Inditex’s goals of halving its emissions across its entire supply chain by 2030. Reutersreports the company also aims to have 40% of its fibers coming from conventional recycling and 25% from “next-generation” materials by the end of the decade.
Inditex also has agreements with recycled fiber producers, and in 2022, invested in Circ, a US textile recycling firm.
