In Denmark, Blue World Technologies has completed successful testing of the world’s first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell system designed for onboard power production using green methanol.
The test demonstrated that the fuel cell system could achieve an electrical efficiency of up to 55%, offering potential fuel savings of 20-30% while enabling up to 100% carbon capture.
As part of the ongoing development, Blue World Technologies plans to install a 1 MW pilot system on one of A.P. Moller – Maersk’s dual-fuel methanol vessels by early 2026. This initiative is supported by significant investment from Maersk Growth and other partners.
Dennis Naldal Jensen, Blue World’s CTO said, “During the test period, we successfully validated our system setup with the methanol fuel processor, the series connection of the fuel cell stacks, as well as the balance of plant components surrounding the fuel cells.”
The company aims to commercialize the fuel cell systems for auxiliary power by 2027, with ambitions to eventually deploy multi-megawatt systems for main ship propulsion.
